Luna & Aria's Uruma Day Trip!
Let's go to Uruma!
If you're planning a trip to Okinawa, Uruma City is definitely a must-visit!
It's because you can enjoy beautiful seas, historical and cultural sites, and delicious food.
We'll introduce you to 5 of our favorite spots among the many recommendations!
So, without further ado, let's get started!
Where is Uruma City located?
If you have no idea where Uruma is, don’t worry! We’ll tell you in this video where it is and how great the city is!
It is located on the east coast of Okinawa Prefecture, in the south of Japan, and it is about an hour's drive from Naha Airport.
Uruma City is home to the Kaichu Road (an inter-island highway that cuts through the water ) and the remote islands that are connected by Kaichu Road, Katsuren Castle Ruins which is a World Heritage site, traditional Eisa dance with a history of 200 years, bullfighting, historical sites, and much more.
Since it is a city where the essence of Okinawan culture is strongly preserved, it is highly recommended for those who love nature and those interested in historical and cultural sites!
Kaichu Road
Kaichu Road is approximately 5 km long, with turquoise blue seas on both sides and an impressive red bridge.
It's recommended for a drive! From Kaichu Road, you can go to Henza Island, Hamahiga Island, Miyagi Island, and Ikei Island, allowing you to go island by a car!
The parking at the roadside park is open 24/7 for free and there are restrooms as well.
The inter-island highway looks completely different at high tides and low tides so make sure to check the tides before heading there! Check the link for the tide table!
A stroll along the water at low tide is also very nice !
At night, sparkling lights illuminate the bridge and it is a perfect spot for dates!
World Heritage Site Katsuren Castle Ruins
World Heritage Site Katsuren Castle Ruins is located on the Katsuren Peninsula in Uruma City and it was the residence of the powerful lord "Amawari" in the 15th century who continued to resist the Ryukyu Kingdom until the end before the kingdom later stabilized.
It is known for its prosperous overseas trade with China, Southeast Asia, and mainland Japan!
The Katsuren Castle Ruins were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 as one of the "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu."
Amawari Park
Amawari Park is an exciting museum which offers an opportunity for both kids and adults to learn about the history and experience the old lifestyle.
Have fun learning about the history here before climbing up to the Katsuren Castle Ruins!
The exhibits showcase the history and culture of Uruma City such as the Katsuren Castle Ruins and artifacts excavated from the site. Enjoy the live performances as well as the live theater that present the story of “Amawari” the 10th lord of Katsuren Castle.
Check the link in the description for details of the performances.
The Okinawan musical, performed only by junior high and high school students from the Uruma City area, and it’s been going on for more than 20 years.
The whole city of Uruma altogether has been working hard to contribute to this performance’s success.
Tourist information center
There is a tourist information center of Uruma City on the premises of the Amawari Park. You can also get multilingual tourist guide leaflets here! There is also a souvenir corner.
Urumarché
Urumarché is a local facility that hosts a market that sells locally harvested vegetables and fresh seafood , as well as a restaurant that serves local products , an outdoor food court, and a conference room.
Urumarché is loved not only by locals as their go to grocery store but also by tourists.
Some tourists buy their groceries here and cook for themselves at their accommodations during their stay. You can have a choice of BBQ party using fresh meat, vegetables and fruits available in the Urumarché as well.
You can also find a wide variety of Okinawan sweets and seasonings here.
We enjoyed Okinawa soba noodles with mozuku seaweed from Uruma City, mozuku seaweed tempura and taco rice (taco ingredients on top of rice)!
CAVE OKINAWA
You get to enjoy a thrilling and extraordinary underground world just like the movie Indiana Jones.
The limestones in the cave are formed over tens of thousands of years which creates the mysterious atmosphere of the cave.
This place is now known as a very popular power spot among the tourists as the word spread.
You’ll enjoy the breathtaking red and white limestones.
The underground tunnel is equipped with well lit lighting and pathways , and it takes only about 30 minutes to go through the cave. It is perfect for visitors of all ages, from small children to the elderly, to explore the cave!
